HISTORY

Prabhukrupa Hospital – started as a 3 bedded ‘small’ Joint Replacement set-up in 2003, over the years, has metamorphosed into a full-fledged 30 bedded exclusive Joint Replacement Hospital, with facilities of international standards to provide high quality and world-class ‘Joint Replacement’ treatment; under the able guidance and enthusiasm of Dr. Ketan Shah, the Chief Arthroplasty Surgeon.

“Prabhukrupa” Hospital is based at Rajkot (amongst top 10 fastest developing cities of India), the cultural & festive capital of Gujarat.

Situated just opposite Senior Citizen’s Rotary Park and besides Jubilee Garden, it is amidst the greenest area of the city. Spread over 11000 sq feet & spanned over 6 stories, it is the only hospital built on “green” principles. It is the Centre of Excellence for Joint Replacement surgery with ‘State Of The Art’ Infrastructure, delineated on International Standards to provide comprehensive care for Knee and Hip problems under a single roof.

It is perhaps the only hospital in entire Gujarat which addresses exclusively to various forms of Knee and Hip Arthritis & their surgical treatment in the form of Primary, Complex Primary and Revision Joint Replacements.

We don’t treat other Orthopaedic problems like fractures, muscular pain, strains, sprains, sports injuries, spondylosis etc, nor are into other forms of Joint Conservation or Joint Preservation surgeries.

Since, we have decided to passionately involve ourselves dedicatedly into Joint Replacement Surgeries; it has been possible for us to invest in the best and the latest possible instrumentation systems for Knee & Hip surgery which are available in the world, to ensure mistake proof surgeries and splendid results. At the manpower level, our nursing staff, physiotherapists, and all other concerned people acquire an extreme level of competence because of repetitive work of the same nature.

The Operation Theatre dedicated for exclusive Joint Replacement Surgery, features the latest Class 100 Vertical Laminar Air Flow System. Sterility in an operating theatre is a must for ensuring that patients are protected from life-threatening infections. The Laminar Air Flow system filters air and creates an extremely homogeneous air flow with very little turbulence. Any bacteria, viruses or dust particles are extracted directly before the air enters the area. This means that the operating area is completely isolated from the surroundings, effectively preventing any contamination by bacteria or virus-laden air. The operation theatre complex is so designed that it is in complete isolation form the routing hustle & bustle of indoor area. Moreover, it matches the international guidelines of planning the ideal operation theatre by having a multi door, multi barrier, crossed entries; where even those areas are sectioned by air curtains. Coupled with this, we use surgical helmet (body exhaust system Turbo T5, from Stryker, USA) with disposable surgical suites and disposable linen to minimize even the minimal risk of infection. With ultra modern instruments like battery operated high end surgical power tools and disposable surgical saw blades (System 7, from Stryker, USA), disposable pulsatile lavage, high end & accurate tournique (Smart pump, from Stryker, USA); the entire surgical procedure gets wonderful end result. We use the best, imported, metal back, high flex “Joints” (Prosthesis) which promises great quality of life.

We have a back-up of fully fledged surgical ICU with ventilator, defibrillator for medically high risk patients undergoing surgery. The standard post – operative procotol is so designed to ensure the fastest of recovery with utmost of care. We routinely use mechanical device (Sequential Compressive Device – calf pump, from Kendall, USA) along with chemical prophylaxis to prevent the risk of development of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Post – operative antibiotic protocol is decided by the team of Infection Disease control team, after review of the regular bacterial and colony from the samples taken from various suseptible areas of operation theatre and the indoor sections. We ONLY have Delux Rooms, Executive & Presidential Suites (NO twin sharing, general wards, common rooms, semi – special room or special rooms) for all joint replacement patients to ensure the best of care & comfort. Our nursing staff & all other concerned are highly trained, qualified & competent, as they are involved repetitively in the work of same nature. We have an in – house Department of Physiotherapy (shortly coming up with Yoga, Spa & Gym) & 24 X 7 Department of Pathology, Radiology & Pharmacy. We have 72 seated Auditorium, Library & A-V room for academic activities.

Born on 9th July, 1972 to Dr. V. C. Shah (General Surgeon) & Dr. Yashuben Shah (Gynaecologist) at Irwin Hospital, Jamnagar; Dr. Ketan Shah did his Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary schooling at St. Mary’s High School, Rajkot.

By the grace of wonderful teachers, who not only implanted educational but also moral values, he entered Pramukh Swami Medical College, Karamsad for medical education. Thereafter, his credentials got him to the postgraduate course of Orthopaedics and, under able guidance of legendary teachers, got the degree of Master in Surgery – Orthoapedics (MS) with Gold Medal.

Wanting to get a super speciality, he decided to achieve the highest ordered qualification in Medical Education of the country in the form of Diplomate of National Board (DNB). Known for its toughest standards & lowest percentage of results (about 3 to 4 %), he was successful to clear the same and acquire that degree. It had been in year 2003 that, Dr. Ketan Shah was the first & the only one in entire Saurastra – Kutch to have possessed this super speciality qualification.

With this as a back drop, he initially joined highly prestigious Shree G. T. Sheth Orthopaedic Hospital, Rajkot and worked for 2 years. This gave an enormous exposure to variety of Orthopaedic and Trauma work. While acquiring experience of the general Orthopaedic and routine trauma & fracture management, one thought always prevailed; and that was the thought of doing something “special”, something “exclusive”, something “focussed” and something “dedicately” in the sub – specialty of Orthopaedics. Seeing the magnitude of the elderly population, and most of them suffering from crippling and devastating joint pain, he directed himself towards the “Care, Preservation and Replacement of Joints” speciality of Orthopaedics. To pursue theoretical and practical excellence, he got extensively trained by internationally acclaimed teachers at Germany, Australia, Singapore & Malaysia.

With zeal and enthusiasm, he started performing joint replacement surgeries in Rajkot (a relatively small city of Gujarat), which was considered otherwise very unusual. At that stage of time, patients from Saurastra suffering from degenerative arthritis of the knees and hips use to travel to higher centres like Ahmedabad or Mumbai for getting themselves treated. It was genuinely difficult from various fronts for vast majority of them, from within the city and especially so, from across Saurastra. He alongwith Prabhukrupa Hospital team started succeeding in their endeavour and the work started speaking volumes. The results that was offered was at par to any institute of national or international repute. This infused a lot of confidence and hence the team got geared up for newer developments.

Since research had always thrilled Dr. Ketan Shah, and, being academically inclined, he started taking small but solid steps in that direction. It is a matter of great pride that one stage of time, he was Director – All India – for Teaching, Training & Education for Total Knee Replacement and Assistant Director – All India – for Research & Development for Total Knee & Hip Replacement. He was instrumental in developing “patient specific instrumentation”, which has revolutionized the surgical procedure. He had the honour of presenting lectures at various organisations, most note worthy being prestigious stages like Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society (APAS), Indian Society of Hip & Knee Surgeons (ISHKS), in addition to various state level and national level Orthopaedic conferences.

Dr. Ketan Shah holds life membership for various associations. The most note worthy being Indian Medical Association, Indian Orthopaedic Association, Gujarat Orthopaedic Association, Bombay Orthopaedic Association, Indian Society of Hip & Knee Surgeons & Asia Pacific Arthoplasty Association. He has delivered many lectures at various platforms – nationally and internationally. He has been mentor and teacher to many junior & budding Orthopods interested in the field of Arthroplasty.
